A Notable Point

Once upon a time, there were three subjects that living in a small library near the suburbs. One day, Math—the youngest one—proudly saying to his brother, Science.

“I’m the most important subject in this entire world! I’m the universal language! I’m plain and simple, yet everyone knows about me no matter how they come from!”

Science rotated his eyes, “You know that’s not true, Math. I’m the first. Everything is first discovered with Science, then Math. I’m the essence to everything.”

“I’m the mother of all sciences, including physics. The whole world uses me. Without me, we would lose many inventions; technology, cars, phones, TV. Even some of the biggest concepts in YOU—” he pointed to Science, “—motion, gravity, relativity would not have been explained without me.”

Hearing that, of course Science could not accept it. “People discover things by using Science, Math only comes in so much later. Just you is not enough to build computers, rockets, even televisions. You hear people are saying ‘Cells are living things because they respond to changes and can reproduce’. That’s me. You don’t hear they’re saying ‘Cells are living things because there are billions of them’. Because that’s you.” Science holding his breath for a second before continuing his words. “... And anyway, what is the subject that helped discover cells in the first place? Yup, it’s me again. So, I think you should up the rank of Science as the most important subject.”

Math was grunting. “I think that’s arrogant, brother. I have the biggest impact in human aspects of their life, including sports, money, music, history, art, social media, and many more. They uses me everyday. Should I give you an example?”

Science shook his head.

“Well, I give you one then. So, listen brother—“ he embraced Science’s shoulder, “—think about this. Doctors need to give their patients in the correct dosage. If the numbers are wrong, the patient might be unwell and the condition could be worse. In school, teachers need to count the number of students in the classroom to make sure that everyone is attending. Do you understand now? How much important your little brother is?”

“No, I don’t. Besides, I’m simply the best so far. My obligation is to fulfill the purpose of the human life. I demonstrate people how things work and why they do so. I’m the mysterious one, yet people are still coming at me to discover all about me.”

Math grimaced.

But it seems like Science couldn’t stop the game Math was starting. “Also, you said that doctors need you. But how are you supposed to know why they get sick and how we can prevent them? Not to mention I have many children; biology, astronomy, computer science, geology, physics, and even social studies. So, what do you think now?”

Math looked fierce, but before he was about to open his mouth, somebody’s interrupting their polemic.

“Children, listen to me.”

Math and Science looked back and found an ancient subject, their mother—Language.

Language embraced their children, Math and Science, with full consideration.

“There's no need to fight," she said. "Long before you were even born, human needs something first to talk to each other. So, that’s why I was created. People should communicate with one another to build relationships, invent cultural background, and create a community. Not only speaking—but also writing, reading even listening are the integral of human life. They needed the primary tool for expression and communication called Language, regardless of their objective or profession.”

Language took a breath before continuing. She look at their children with smile in her eyes.

“Doctors have to write the prescriptions to their patients, teachers need to speak in class to make their students understand, writers have to write books for people to read, lawyers need to write strong defenses to defend someone, and so on. For every little thing people do, they need Language.”

Math and Science nodding their heads.

“One important thing, Language isn’t like any other subjects. You can’t cheat your way out of it. Every other subject relies on facts and figures you can easily obtain in seconds, but Language doesn’t work like that. It's the way of life. It encompasses every other subject area of our lives. It determines whether or not we sound educated just by the way the language is used. Now, do you understand, Sons?”

Once again, Math and Science nodded.

“So...” Math began to sound. “In the end language is the most important subject?”

Science patted his forehead. “It’s not what mother is trying to tell, brother. She means that every single subject is important for human life. We are combined to make a better life for human being.”

Language chuckled. “Your brother was right, Math. It’s not important who’s the one is better than the other, because human uses subject based on their goals and objectivity. It’s different for each individual. All you guys need to do is to accompany them to achieve their destination, okay?”

“Understood, Mother,” said Math and Science almost at the same time.

“Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.”
